Kate Winslet reveals the story behind the Jack Dawson role in ‘Titanic’

Kate Winslet talks to Stephen Colbert in an interview on The Late Show over the weekend on Youtube. In this show, Kate Winslet revealed that she had originally auditioned with Matthew McConaughey. Before James Cameron picked Leonardo DiCaprio for his period drama Titanic, he had auditioned Matthew McConaughey, Kate Winslet told Stephen Colbert in an interview.

In ‘Titanic’ movie Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCapro casted as passengers on board the passenger liner RMS Titanic that sank after hitting an iceberg on April 15, 1912. It was released on December 19, 1997 and became a global blockbuster. These two actors won Oscar awards for this movie.

Titanic catapulted DiCaprio to international stardom. These two actors, DiCaprio and Winslet have routinely featured on “Best on-screen couples of all time” lists ever since. A remastered version has been released in the United States of America to mark its twentieth anniversary.

In the interview Kate said that “I was previously auditioned with Matthew, isn’t that weird? This was never said that in public before. This audition was completely fantastic. It just wouldn’t have been the whole, Jack and Rose, Kate and Leo thing.”

She explained what has happened at the time of the Titanic audition. Matthew McConaughey who appeared in Dazed and Confused (1993), Lone Star (1996), and Billy Crudrup was auditioned for the part of Jack Dawson that DiCaprio made. But, James Cameron made the decision to switch McConaughey out in favor of DiCaprio, as he wanted someone who looked like he was 20 to play the part, which is what eventually helped land DiCaprio the role.

Apparently, Kate Winslet and Matthew McConaughey played Rose and Jack roles which were pretty much set good for a while. The movie’s director James Cameron had a different view about this role, and insisted Leonardo DiCaprio to play Jack instead. And the rest is history. Winslet recalled her very early Titanic days of working with McConaughey in public and revealed all this new information about ”Titanic” for the first time through that interview.

Later director switched to DiCaprio as it would be the safe move when you look at the film credits of the two actors before Titanic came out in 1997. At that time, Matthew McConaughey was at the beginning stage of the acting game, still best known for his first film role in Dazed & Confused in 1993, and despite proving himself his only lead role had been in the fourth installment of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre horror franchise.

She also said that she thought to list some other big actors that auditioned for Jack role in Titanic but did not get the part. A-list actors, such as Christian Bale, Johnny Depp, and even Macaulay Culkin also auditioned for this role.

She also added that, it is fun to think about how different Titanic would have been with a young Matthew McConaughey and all of those other movie stars playing drawing Rose like one of his French girls instead of Leonardo DiCaprio for the role of Jack Dawson.

DiCaprio got a breakout role in and it’s safe to say that it would have done the same for McConaughey if the production company had its way. But at the end, it really didn’t matter as both DiCaprio and McConaughey became the two biggest names in Hollywood.

McConaughey received his first Oscar for his lead role in 2013’s Dallas Buyers Club through which he made a name for himself by helming some of the biggest rom-coms throughout 2000s, later started focusing on more dramatic roles. Leonardo DiCaprio  after  his Titanic, he got boom by becoming Martin Scorsese’s muse, continuing to star in a string of critically acclaimed dramas.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Matthew McConaughey after 15 years of Titanic, finally worked together in “The Wolf of Wall Street” in 2013. In that both played as ruthlessly affluent businessman.
